• communication channel refers to transmission media and which data
• transmission media carries one more signal
• bandwith refers to the amount of data that can travel over a communication channel
• Broadband media transmitted multiple signal simultaneously

 Wireless transmission media
- cellular radio is form of broadcast radio that is used widely for mobile communications

-Microwave are radio waves that provide a high speed signal transmisson

- Communication satellite is space station that receives microwave signal and earth based station 

- GPS ( global positioning System ) is navigation sysytem that consists of one or more earth based receiver that accepted and analyze signal send by satellite in order to determine the receiver geographical location

• Server - control access to network
• client - other computer that rely on the server for it resources

Peer to Peer

• inexpensive computers that connect fewer than 10 computers
• each computers has responsibilities and capabilities , sharing resouces with other computers .

Network Topologies 

Network topologies refersn to the layout of the computers and devices in a communication network 

1. star network

all of the computers device connect to a central device

     2. bus network

Consists of a single central cable, which all computers and other devices connect

     

     3.ring network

A cable forms a closed loop (ring) with all computers and devices arranged along the ring

Communications

• ˜Computer communications describes a process in which two or more computers or devices transfer data, instructions, and information
• ˜Components for successful communications:

     Sending device : Initiates an instruction to transmit data, instruction, or information.
 Eg: mainframe, desktop,pc server                 

            

         Communication device : Device that connects the sending and receiving device to a communication channel.
 Eg: modem, network card, router, hub/switch.

         Communication channel : Transmission media on which the data, instructions, or information travel
 Eg: telephone line , cable tv.

         

          Receiving device : Accepts the transmission of data, instructions or information
. Eg: mainframe, desktop pc,                                                   server, notebook, smart phone, GPS receivers etc.
